Brain Power+ Program

Improve focus, attention, motor planning, and executive function skills

As we develop the foundation of the brain with primitive reflex integration, as soon as the child is able, we want to challenge and develop the cerebellum. The cerebellum is the part of the brain that controls balance, posture, coordination, focus/attention, and many other cognitive functions. The at-home Interactive Metronome™ (IM) is an evidence-based training tool that has been proven to improve cognition, attention, memory, focus, speech/language, executive functioning, comprehension, as well as motor and sensory skills. The Brain Power+ Program includes exercises for balance, coordination, and the at-home Interactive Metronome™ for neural timing. We begin with an assessment to develop a unique, customized program for your child.

Co-activating the sensory & motor systems creates the most powerful change to the brain. We do this by combining balance and coordination activities, along with neural timing. Use of the Interactive Metronome™ exercises several key neurological functions together including attention & concentration, working memory, sensory integration, motor planning/sequencing, and coordination/motor control.

"What is fired together, is wired together"

The Science Behind Interactive Metronome™

At Brain Connex Therapy, we use Interactive Metronome® (IM) as one component of a comprehensive neurological treatment approach. IM is a computer-based timing and rhythm program designed to improve the brain's ability to process timing, coordinate movement, and synchronize motor responses.

Research suggests that precise timing is fundamental to how the brain plans movement, coordinates the body, maintains attention, and develops efficient motor skills. While Interactive Metronome is not a stand-alone treatment for any diagnosis, growing evidence supports its ability to improve motor timing and motor performance—skills that are foundational for many children with developmental challenges.

Research Highlights

Improved Motor Performance

A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 18 prospective studies involving 466 participants and found that Interactive Metronome training produced moderate improvements in motor functioning across children and adults, including individuals with neurological conditions. Researchers concluded that improving motor timing can enhance overall movement quality and motor performance.

Better Timing and Coordination

Interactive Metronome is specifically designed to strengthen temporal processing—the brain's ability to accurately time movement. Timing plays an important role in:

  • Motor planning

  • Bilateral coordination

  • Balance

  • Movement sequencing

  • Smooth, coordinated movement

  • Attention during movement

Because many developmental skills rely on efficient timing, improvements in this area may support broader functional performance.

Transfer to Functional Skills

In a pediatric rehabilitation study, children who completed approximately 14 Interactive Metronome sessions demonstrated statistically significant improvements in hand function and timing skills, despite not directly practicing those specific hand tasks during treatment. Parents also reported improvements in self-regulation. These findings suggest that improvements in timing may transfer to functional motor performance.

Why We Use Interactive Metronome

At Brain Connex Therapy, we don't view Interactive Metronome as a "quick fix." Instead, we use it to strengthen one important piece of brain development: timing.

When appropriate, IM may be incorporated into treatment to support children experiencing challenges with:

  • Motor planning

  • Coordination

  • Balance

  • Bilateral integration

  • Attention

  • Executive functioning

  • Fine motor skills

  • Motor sequencing

Interactive Metronome is always integrated with individualized occupational therapy interventions, including primitive reflex integration, sensory processing, postural control, visual-motor integration, and purposeful movement activities designed to improve real-world function.

Our Evidence-Based Philosophy

Brain development is complex. No single intervention addresses every aspect of a child's needs. We believe the best outcomes occur when evidence-informed tools are combined within a comprehensive neurological treatment plan tailored to each child's unique strengths and challenges.

Conditions Interactive Metronome™ Helps:

ADHD

Improves attention, focus, and impulse control through structured, rhythmic exercises that enhance the brain’s timing mechanisms, leading to better behavior management and academic performance

Autism Spectrum Disorders

Helps clients better integrate sensory information and develop coordinated responses, leading to improved daily functioning and greater participation in social activities.

Sensory Processing Disorder

IM provides a tailored approach to SPD clients by boosting motor planning, coordination, and adaptive responses to sensory stimuli, leading to better daily functioning and emotional regulation.

Developmental Delays & Disorders

Provides an engaging and systematic approach to improve motor coordination, cognitive processing, and adaptive responses, leading to better overall development and functional abilities in daily activities.

Traumatic Brain Injury

Aids in the rehabilitation of individuals with TBI by enhancing cognitive and motor functions through precise, rhythm-based exercises, improving neurotiming, coordination, and processing speed.

Parkinson's, Stroke, MS & Other Neurological Conditions

Enhances motor control, coordination, and cognitive functions through tailored timing and rhythm based exercises that promote neurotiming, development of neural pathways via neuroplasticity, as well as overall neurological health.

The Interactive Metronome - Home Unit comes with a Metronome unit, headphones, a digital download program, button trigger, velcro straps and a foot tap mat.  Once purchased your child's unit will have an initial assessment and a customized program created for them each month.

Frequently asked questions

You've got questions. We've got answers.

How do I get started with IM?

Once we decide that your child is ready for the IM at-home unit, the first thing you will do is purchase the unit directly from Interactive Metronome™. You can choose between a wired version (~$499) or wireless (~$599).

Once you receive the unit, you will enroll in our Brain Power+ Program ($149/month) and I will upload the initial assessment for your child to take. Your child's program will be created based off of their results.

They will receive a monthly program (3-5x/week for 4 weeks). After each month they will re-take the initial assessment and we create a new, more challenging program based on progress.

Can I do Brain Power+ without doing reflex integration first?

Yes, some children will be able to start with the Brain Power+ Program. If you have already done a reflex integration program, or your child is functioning at a higher level & reflexes are not retained - they will benefit from the Brain Power+ Program without needing the Brain-Body Connex Program.

Feel free to email us at brainconnex@gmail.com if you have questions and we can schedule a call to determine if it's the right fit for your child.

What does a typical session look like?

Once you receive your at-home IM unit, I will upload an initial assessment for your child to take. Based of the scoring, I create a monthly program for your child that consists of session 3-5x/week, as prescribed, for ~30-45 minutes/session. A session will include 15-30 minutes of IM use along with ~15 minutes of balance & coordination exercises.

Each month your child will take an assessment to see progress and a new monthly program will be created based on results.

How do I know if IM is a good fit for my child?

Before purchasing a home unit, we want to make sure your child will be successful.

To ensure success, we recommend that your child have been participating in reflex integration work (if needed) either before starting IM or during the use of IM.

You can also use the following checklist to see if your child is ready:

What is the cost?

The at-home unit that is purchased directly through Interactive Metronome™ costs $499-599 depending on whether you choose a wired or wireless version.

We recommend the wired version for its ease of use.

For the admin side of the program including additional balance & coordination exercises, you will purchase our Brain Power+ Program, costing $149/month. This cost includes initial assessment & programming, monthly re-assessments & programming, and guidance from your therapist via an app.

We've done reflex work already, can we get started?

Yes absolutely. Just reach out to us via email at brainconnex@gmail.com to get started and let us know the programs you have done with your child. As long as they will be set up for success we are happy to get them going right away with our Brain Power+ Program.
