    Why is my child struggling to pay attention and learn in school??

    Common symptoms related to children struggling in school may include the following:

    * oral & written expression

    * reading & written comprehension

    * lack of focus

    * inability to follow directions

    * poor sequencing ability

    * confusion on information

    * poor social skills

    Why is this the case? Could it be an under development of the brain?

    Often struggling learners also show symptoms of an immature brain. Common symptoms include lack of fear, inappropriate laughter, aversion to tactile/touch sensations, difficulty interacting with others, avoiding eye contact, preference to play alone, poor coordination, and emotional dysregulation.

    Why do we see these types of symptoms? What is at the "root cause"?

    When children are struggling we often see that one side of the brain is not fully connected and communicating to the other side. There is a "functional disconnection". When the foundation of the brain and horizontal communication is delayed, executive function skills will suffer.

    We need brain balance for executive function.

    Both hemispheres of the brain need to work in a harmonious balance to understand information. Both hemispheres interpret information from the senses and academic information differently - so they need to work together to gather the full picture. To strengthen executive function skills both sides need to be in balance and strong.

    How can we achieve better balance?

    We can improve a child's executive function skills, needed for all learning tasks, by strengthening the brain from the bottom-up. First integrating primitive reflexes, while balancing hemispheres for improved communication. Finally, challenging the prefrontal cortex with cognitive tasks.
