Could Better Balance Actually Help Your Child Pay Attention?
When we think about balance, we usually think about coordination, sports, or preventing falls. But balance is actually a much more complex brain task—and it may have implications for attention, focus, and executive function too.
A child standing on one foot isn't simply trying not to fall. Their brain is constantly processing information from the vestibular system, vision, muscles, and joints, while simultaneously making tiny adjustments to keep the body upright. That means balance activities can require the brain to pay attention, process information, inhibit unnecessary movement, and make rapid adjustments.
And that's one reason I love using purposeful balance activities with kids.
Balance Isn't Just a Physical Skill
Think about what happens when your child is standing on an unstable surface.
They have to:
Notice where their body is in space
Maintain their center of gravity
Coordinate both sides of the body
Process visual information
Adjust muscle activity
Stay focused on the task
Respond when their body starts to lose balance
That's a lot of brain work happening at the same time.
This is where movement becomes more than "exercise." We're giving the brain an opportunity to practice coordinating movement and attention at the same time.
What Does the Research Say About Movement and Attention?
Research increasingly supports a connection between physical activity and cognitive skills in children.
A meta-analysis of 31 intervention studies found that physical activity was associated with improvements in attention and executive functions in children ages 6–12. Interestingly, the researchers found benefits from both acute physical activity and longer-term programs, with regular activity over several weeks showing particularly meaningful effects.
More recent research is even more interesting because it looks at cognitively engaging movement—activities where children have to think, react, remember, switch between tasks, or make decisions while moving.
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of 23 randomized controlled trials involving 2,857 children and adolescents found that cognitively engaging physical activity improved executive function, particularly inhibitory control and working memory. The researchers also found that programs lasting more than six weeks and occurring more than twice a week tended to be more effective.
Another 2025 meta-analysis found that cognitively engaging physical activity had a stronger effect on executive function than traditional physical activity alone.
So What Does That Have to Do With Your Child's Focus?
Attention isn't simply the ability to "sit still."
A child needs to be able to orient to what matters, filter out distractions, hold information in their working memory, inhibit impulses, and shift their attention when necessary.
Those are executive-function skills.
And movement can give us a unique way to practice some of these skills.
For example, instead of simply asking a child to stand on one foot, we can add a cognitive challenge:
Balance + counting backward.
Balance + following a sequence.
Balance + catching a ball.
Balance + responding to a visual cue.
Balance + switching between two movements.
Now the child isn't just balancing.
They're balancing while thinking.
That's the kind of movement I find particularly valuable when the goal extends beyond physical skills.
Why 10 Minutes Can Be a Great Place to Start
You don't necessarily need to turn movement into another overwhelming activity on your family's schedule.
A short, consistent movement routine can give your child's brain repeated opportunities to practice these skills.
And that's really the message behind the image above:
10 minutes a day isn't about creating a perfect workout.
It's about creating opportunities for your child to practice balance, coordination, body awareness, attention, motor planning, and confidence in a way that feels like movement—not another academic demand.
The Goal Isn't "Sit Still"
One of the things I wish more parents knew is that sometimes the answer to "How do I get my child to focus?" isn't necessarily more sitting.
Sometimes the brain needs movement first.
Purposeful movement can provide the sensory and motor input that helps a child become more organized and ready to engage.
That doesn't mean balance exercises are a treatment for ADHD or that every child who struggles with attention simply needs more exercise. The research is more nuanced than that.
But it does tell us something important:
The brain and body aren't separate systems.
When we help children develop better control of their bodies, we're also giving them opportunities to practice some of the skills their brains use for learning, participation, and everyday life.
