“Pro-Social behavior will not occur when our neuroception misreads the environmental cues and triggers the physiological states that support defensive strategies,” Dr. Stephen Porges.

What this means is when a child is in “fight or flight”, or the sympathetic nervous system is triggered, they are unable to be social, have good eye contact, good language, etc. Their bodies are telling them to fight or flee. Blood rushes to their muscles which also causes digestive issues. Many children with ASD, SPD, ADHD are in a sympathetic state majority of the day. They fear the unknown; or have irrational fears of noises and places, putting their body in the sympathetic state. We cannot ask of them to be social, or have good eye contact, while in this state. The Safe & Sound Protocol helps to calm the sympathetic state and put the child into the parasympathetic state, allowing them to respond to sensory information without fear.

Made for both adults and kids, this 5-day listening protocol helps with stress, anxiety, trauma, sleep 💤, auditory sensitivities and more. It helps take your body out of the sympathetic, fear-based zone, and put it into the parasympathetic, calm & collected zone 😎

Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a five-day auditory intervention designed to reduce stress and auditory sensitivity while enhancing social engagement and resilience. Based on Dr. Porges’ Polyvagal Theory, by calming the physiological and emotional state, the door is opened for improved communication and more successful therapy.

The SSP is a research-based therapy showing significant results in just five days in the following areas:

  • Social and emotional difficulties
  • Auditory sensitivities
  • Anxiety and trauma related challenges
  • Inattention
  • Stressors that impact social engagement

Emotional and physiological state are critical to how we approach the task at hand. So when a client has better state control, not only can they be more socially engaged, they are more open to therapy. Better state regulation improves therapeutic outcomes. Read more about how the SSP is helping clients.

This non-invasive intervention involves listening to music that has been processed specifically to retune the nervous system (regulating state) to introduce a sense of safety and the ability to socially engage. This allows the client to better interpret not only human speech, but, importantly, the emotional meaning of language. Once interpersonal interactions improve, spontaneous social behaviors and an enhanced ability to learn, self-regulate and engage are often seen.

We are now offering the Safe & Sound Protocol through Integrated Listening Systems at Brain Connex Therapy! This month I am using the treatment on myself and my son to feel the effects in our own bodies. Although we have made tremendous gains in his auditory hypersensitivity simply using primitive reflex integration & brain balance movements (the foundations of our online sensory & movement programs); he continues to be overly scared of random loud noises and crowded spaces. I am hopeful the SSP will help him stay in the parasympathetic zone more often. Have you tried it before? We would love to hear how it worked for you!

This service is available as a virtual treatment option. I will chat with you initially to make sure it is a right fit for you or your child. We will send you the equipment, and connect on a daily basis about how the treatment is going. It is best to use this treatment in conjunction with other therapies. (ie, it is not a stand alone treatment). If your child demonstrates any of the issues stated above, it is best to use the SSP program prior to starting a movement or primitive reflex integration program.
